Established in 1944, Mobern Lighting Company has been a venerable designer/manufacturer of a wide range of industrial/commercial state of the art, energy efficient lighting fixtures and solutions in Howard County, Maryland since 1957. Mobern is an approved preferred fixture supplier under the local BGE and PEPCO utility rebate program and is now located in an 80,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art manufacturing/distribution facility located in Jessup.
Over the past 3 years, Mobern has doubled its workforce and increased sales by over 100%. This growth was initially attributable to local projects involving Maryland institutions, government agencies (federal and state) and commercial/industrial building owners, alike. As older buildings surrounding the Maryland-DC region are evaluated and slated for retro-fit, the demand for Mobern's products and services forever increase. For example, Mobern identified and supplied energy efficient lighting solutions to the Maryland Sports Authority (Camden Yards), Prince George’s County School System, BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, Howard County Government, National Institute of Science and Technology, Naval Observatory Library, NSA, DOT (MV Cape Washington), Bureau of Engraving, Bethesda Naval Hospital, Ft. Meade, Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Ft. Detrick. Each of these projects offered unique challenges for Mobern and at end of product installation very satisfied customers. In fact, Mobern received both the Economic Development Award for its economic impact on the local economy from the Howard County Economic Development Authority and recognition for its “second chance” hiring practices. More recently, Mobern has expanded nationally and now has 30 sale representative agencies and 7 stocking warehouse throughout the continental United States. Every day Mobern is given a new and unique opportunity to supply its products because of its in-house design and engineering capabilities and flexible manufacturing operations which, when combined to address end-user requirements, yield energy efficient lighting solutions in a timely and cost-effective way. In addition to manufacturing fixtures and retrofit kits, Mobern provides value added services such as energy savings audit/evaluations and design/engineering services to its distributor customers and the end-user. Mobern also provides industry “best practices” training and continuing professional education training courses (through its in-house training center dubbed “Mobern University”) in order to promote job placement/creation. One of its courses is a basic energy audit course in lighting and teaches contractors how to evaluate a building using our proprietary software programs and recommend (through a comprehensive cost/benefit proposal) advanced lighting retrofit solutions.
Mobern also prides itself on being a valued member of the local Maryland business community. It is a member of the Fuel Fund of Maryland, Maryland Clean Energy Center, the Baltimore-Washington and Howard County Chambers of Commerce, the Howard County Technology Council and an industry partner with the Independents Electrical Contractors Association – (Chesapeake Chapter) and an active participant in the Governor’s Workforce Investment Board Energy Industry Initiative (formed mainly for Green Jobs creation). More recently, Mobern has enlisted to become a manufacturing sponsor of the MEP “boot camp” initiative for new hire placements. Mobern is also a staunch supporter of the SAVE Coalition and U.S. Green Building Council. Mobern was also pleased to have been selected as a test company in the BRAC Business Initiative (co-sponsored by Congressman Elijah Cummings, Senator Ben Cardin and County Executive Ken Ulman) and a driving force behind the start-up of the Baltimore Washington Chamber of Commerce Green Alliance Committee. Bill Stone, the company’s president, is member of the BWCC Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, a member of the Maryland Clean Energy Center Advisory Board and a member of the Fuel Fund of Maryland Board of Directors.
